Jeff Smith has been named the head softball coach for the 2015 season, following Kevin Wilkerson, who led the program for the previous eight years. Jeff has been involved in the youth softball program for the last six years, and looks to continue the recent success of the program which won the NWC in 2013 and has reached the district level the last two years.
Jeff joins three others who will be leading a T-Bird team for the first time in the 2014-2015 seasons. Scott Palte takes over the football program after being the assistant head coach last season. Scott was the head coach at Columbus Grove for seven seasons, compiling a record of 46-27 and leading them to the playoffs in two different seasons.
The other two new coaches for the T-Birds next year are Garry Tabler, who will head boys soccer, and Nick Sanchez, who is taking over the wrestling program. Tabler was named head coach after multiple years in the LCC youth soccer program and one year as an assistant coach of the varsity team under Bryan Burkholder. The soccer team is coming off of the best season in school history, falling just short of regionals after losing to Kalida in penalty kicks.
Taking over the wrestling program is Nick Sanchez, who was named head coach a year ago but took a year to finish his Masters at Heidelberg. In that year, Paul Basinger was named interim head coach, leading the team to a strong season, capped off by Jack Huffman placing at the state meet. Sanchez was previously the head wrestling coach at Shawnee, and has been a part of the Heidelberg staff for the past three years. Let’s all give our four new coaches a great T-Bird welcome!
