When head baseball coach John Schnieders put together a baseball tournament for his summer ACME team, he did it more from the standpoint of raising some money for the program. But what he got was much more, as his team rode a great weekend of pitching to win the championship in the first Thunderbird Classic.
Summer baseball is always a crapshoot of who will be playing, but when you have quality programs like Crestview, St. Henry and Tinora, who all made the state level last year in spring baseball, you know you have to play good baseball to come out on top, and that is exactly what the T-Birds did. Ian Friesner got things started on Saturday with a complete game win against Crestview, and Jake Williams followed up with a complete game win over Napoleon. In the semifinals on Saturday, Liam Stolly threw six strong innings against Findlay, with Bitler Rumer finishing up to get the team to the finals, where Ethan O”Connor stopped St. Henry for six innings. Jake Williams finished things up, and the T-Birds had won the title. While it’s a long way to next year’s baseball season, three or four wins over strong opponents never hurts to get things headed in the right direction. Nice job T-Birds!!
