Winning one state championship in a school year is an accomplishment only a few schools get to experience. Doing it twice in just a little more than two months is even more extraordinary.
Lima Central Catholic won its second boys state basketball championship in March when it beat Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph 64-62 in the Division III title game in a match-up in which many people didn’t give the Thunderbirds a chance.
Then 10 weeks later and maybe a half-mile away from the site of that victory, LCC won the Division III boys state track championship, highlighted by Mykale Rogers winning his third consecutive long jump state title with a Division III record jump of 24 feet, 5 ½ inches. Jamir Coleman swept the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash and the winning 800 relay team broke the state meet record.
That state championship double play stands out from the field and has earned another title — the top local sports story of the year in 2014.
