LCC’s Hunter Lucas is congratulated by his coach Nick Sanchez after making the finals at 120 pounds during the state individual wrestling championships Friday at The Jerome Schottenstein Center on the campus of The Ohio State University in Columbus.
COLUMBUS — For Lima Central Catholic senior Hunter Lucas, it’s all about getting another shot in the finals.

Last season, at the Division III state wrestling tournament at Ohio State, Lucas lost a hard-fought match in the finals of the 113-pound weight class, 1-0, to Dayton Christian’s Tommy Hoskins.

Now, Lucas (45-2) will get another chance to capture that elusive state title.

Friday night, Lucas defeated Massillon Tuslaw’s Isaac Elliott 10-8 in a semifinal to advance to tonight’schampionship match at 120, against Delta’s Drew Mattin (46-5). Mattin won a state title last season at 106 pounds.

Tonight, on the big stage at Ohio State’s Jerome Schottenstein Center, Lucas will get one more shot at a state title.

“I’m pretty excited,” Lucas said. “But, I have to stay focused. It’s a huge match tomorrow. This is my senior year, it’s the state finals. I can’t be too excited about the state finals, because I have to stay focused. It feels great, but I still have one more to go.”

In Friday’s championship quarterfinal, Lucas major-decisioned Sandusky St. Marys Central Catholic’s Cameron Gessner, 11-3.

Added LCC coach Nick Sanchez, “We’re wrestling with a purpose. That’s the main goal right now. The main thing is that we come out physical and ready to wrestle the way we know how.”
