Five Thunderbird Student-Athletes spent Friday afternoon announcing their college decisions. Hunter Lucas will wrestle at the University of Maryland, Nick Taflinger will play basketball at Bluffton, Ryan Rhodes will play football at Ohio Wesleyan, while Dru Edwards and Paul Holbrook will both play football at Heidelberg.
Lucas capped an amazing high school wrestling career in March by finishing state runner up for the second straight year in his weight class. The three time state qualifier verbally committed to the Terps in the fall, and made it official Friday. He will look to compete in the 125 pound weight class for the Big Ten’s most recent addition.
For Taflinger, it was a pretty easy decision to attend Bluffton, his brother Billy just wrapped up an impressive career for the Beavers. Taflinger averaged over seven points per game this past season and was part of two state championship teams. Taflinger also was part of the state championship relay team his freshman year of track.
Rhodes was a three year starter on the offensive line in Football and played all three positions in his time at LCC. He will join the Battling Bishops where he hopes to step in and contribute.
Holbrook and Edwards will both attend Heidelberg after impressive senior seasons. Holbrook caught 25 passes for 386 yards and developed into a nice offensive addition for Coach Scott Palte. Edwards led the team in interceptions as a defensive back, including bringing one back for a touchdown over 70 yards against Elida.
Congratulations to these five Thunderbirds who will look to impact their respective sports at the next level.
